Donald was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Jane and William Lumgair. Donald was known in Calgary for his athletic abilities on the football field of Western Canada High School in Calgary. He moved to Oregon to further pursue his education and play football for Oregon College of Education at Monmouth, Oregon. After graduating he also attended California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA.
Donald taught school at Los Banos High School for thirty years, from 1962-1992. He coached football, swimming and golf. He also coached the Los Banos Tiger Sharks swim team in summer recreation, and served on the Los Banos Recreation Commission Board.
He was Past-President of the Los Banos Teachers Association and was one of the founders of the Merced-Mariposa chapter to California Teachers Association in Merced. He was also Past-President of the Turlock Golf and Country Club, as well as a volunteer for the AT&T and U.S. Open Golf Tournaments. He served as a committeeman for the Northern California Golf Association after retiring from teaching.
Donald is survived by Darlene, his wife of 39 years; two sons Gavin of Palm Desert, CA and Ian and his wife Jillof Fayetteville, N.C. and their four children Lyssa, Conner, Carolina, and Amelia. He is also survived by two step-daughters Kalinda and Kathy Kelly of Turlock; his sister Dorothy and her husband Pete Kennedy of Calgary.
A celebration of his life will be held at Western View Mobile Home Ranch Clubhouse 1400 N. Tully Rd. in Turlock on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 2:00p.m. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to Hospice of Emanuel 825 Delbon Ave. Turlock, CA 95380.
