June 1921 ~ Jan 2012 »

Helen June Mitchell, 90, of Livingston, passed away at Grace Home in Livingston. Helen was born in Merced to Clifford and Margaret Cassell. She grew up in Livingston most of her life. She graduated from Livingston High School in 1939 and attended one year of college. In 1940 she married the love of her life, John Warren Mitchell. They were married for 65 years before his death in 2005. They lived on the Mitchell family farm and Helen was a hard working farm wife. She moved sprinklers twice a day and worked in the chicken houses in addition to her responsibilities as a busy wife and mother. At one time they had the largest fryer chicken farm in the nation, raising 24,000 chickens at a time.

Helen is remembered as a librarian with the Livingston Branch of the Merced County Library. She worked 24 years with the library and became one of the founders of the Livingston Historical Museum which is housed in the old library.

Helen was preceded in death by her son Keith Warren Mitchell and her husband John Warren Mitchell. She is survived by three children: John Donald Mitchell (JoAnne) of Menlo Park, CA, Julianne Mitchell of Atwater, and Robert Joseph Mitchell of Winton; a sister Elizabeth Clay of Maryland, 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions for Helen June Mitchell are suggested for the Livingston Historical Museum, 604 Main Street, Livingston, CA 95334.

Plans are pending for a Memorial Service to be held at the Livingston Historical Museum in the next few weeks.

As a librarian in Livingston she was like a mother and special friend to most of us that used the library. She was always ready to listen and share her opinions. She will be greatly missed.
