Angel Montoya Avalos

Angel “Joe” Avalos, 82, of Turlock, passed away at Emanuel Medical Center with family members by his side. Angel was born in Gilroy, California to Toribio and Concha Avalos. They moved to Turlock in 1939 and he attended Turlock Schools. He completed his high school diploma through Turlock Adult School in the 1970’s. He met his wife, Laura Velasquez, through a close friendship of their families. As teenagers their close friendship blossomed into love and they were married in 1951. They moved to Santa Ana for a few years where they had 2 of their children. They later settled in Turlock where they were active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Angel worker construction, then began driving a truck, and then completed 24 years as a union construction laborer before retiring. After retirement, Angel was made a life member of the AFL-CIO Union Local 1130. He was a member of the Turlock Sportsman’s Club. His life was his family; he loved family gatherings.

Angel was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Laura Avalos; 5 siblings: twin sisters that died very young, and 3 brothers: Jesse, David, and Albert; and a daughter Angela. He is survived by his children: Alfred Avalos and Arthur (Debbie Vega) Avalos, all of Turlock, Alex (Jeanine) Avalos of Ceres, Adam (Sandra) Avalos of Turlock, Amanda (Jacob) Gomes of Escalon; 2 brothers: Richard (Sally) Avalos of Tucson AZ and Raymond (Heidi) Avalos of Truckee CA, 15 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

The Avalos family would like to thank the staff of Emanuel Medical Center for their diligent care and the staff of Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their tender, compassionate care while Angel lived there.

Visitation will be at Allen Mortuary on Monday, September 21st from 5 to 7 pm followed by the Rosary at 7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Turlock on Tuesday, September 22nd at 10 am. Burial will follow at Turlock Memorial Park. Memorial gifts are welcomed for the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington D.C. 20090-6011.
