Audery “Aud” Luster Leonard (87) of Hilmar, CA passed away on Wednesday evening, September 11, 2013 at a skilled nursing center in Turlock, CA . He was born October 7, 1925 in Washington County, Virginia to Airy Newell and Blanche Burnice Millsap Leonard. He was the oldest of their nine children. He graduated from Hope High School in 1943. He served with the U.S. Army from 1945-46, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was stationed in Okinawa where he worked in communications.
On November 18, 1951, he married Norma Jean Kerr in Reno, NV. She survives at the home.
Audery was a commercial carpenters’ superintendent. He worked with companies in the Southwestern U.S. and later in the San Francisco Bay Area, constructing large commercial buildings and parking facilities. Later they moved to Modesto, CA. It was during this time that he and Jean developed their interests in horses and Gymkhana, Aud became an officially certified rodeo judge for the state of California. This hobby took him throughout the state judging horses. Aud was Jean’s best cheerleader when she and her horse, Ringo, brought home many blue ribbons and trophies in pole bending and barrel racing. They did extensive work with 4-H Clubs and other children’s groups promoting Gymkhana.
Aud and Jean were avid travelers, and were familiar with every state in the lower 48. They were full-time RVers for a few years. At the end of this segment of their lives, they moved back to California to a retirement village in Hilmar near Jean’s family.
In addition to his wife, Audery is survived by four sisters: Thelma (Kenneth) Barr, Lee’s Summit, MO; Elvalee (Richard) Winburn, Padre Island, TX; Margaret Brownie (Raymond) Hartman, Uniontown, KS; Lucille (Jerry) Romig, Lee’s Summit, MO; three brothers Amos (Sharon) Leonard, Girard, KS; David (Sandy) Leonard, Oak Grove, MO; and Rufus (Pat) Leonard, Bloomfield, NM, plus many nieces and nephews; sister in law Nadine Thomas, Lee Santos and husband Manuel of Hilmar; brother in law Phillip Kerr and wife Jeanine of San Jose and many nieces and nephews. Aud’s parents, his sister Martha Jane (Janie) Hiller of McCune, KS preceded him in death.
Memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 3:00p.m. at Allen Mortuary.
