Bruce Anderson Gray, Sr.
After a brave and courageous battle with Dementia Bruce A. Gray, 81, of Hilmar went to be with his Lord in Modesto, Ca. Bruce was born in Paris, Kentucky to Bruce Gray and Willie (Reynolds) Gray. At the young age of 3 Bruce’s father was killed in a motorcycle accident, which brought on hard times for him and his family. He was sent to live with his aunt and uncle where he had to earn his keep on a tobacco farm. Through this process, it was there that he learned the value of hard work. In 1951 during the Korean War at the age of 17 Bruce joined the Air Force. After basic training in San Antonio, Texas he was stationed at Castle AFB in California where he was an aircraft mechanic and welder. While in the Air Force, he met and married the love of his life, Anna Mae Perez in May of 1955. After honorably serving his country for 4 years, he moved to the Bay Area after leaving the military life and became a cabinet maker for the next 40 years. In 1963 Bruce and Anna moved their 3 children to a 16 acre farm in Hilmar. It was there that they established long lasting roots in the community. Bruce enjoyed square dancing, meetings with his pinochle club, and spent many years coaching his sons in baseball. Above all, he was a true family man who loved the Lord. He was a member of his church in Hilmar for over 45 years and regularly helped to repair and maintain anything that was needed there. Bruce never knew a stranger and was known to many for his extreme kindness. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
After the sudden death of his wife Anna in April of 1989 he married Florence Price in February of 1991, whom she preceded him in death in August of 2013. Bruce was also preceded in death by his parents, brother Oscar Gray, two sisters: Norah McClary and Barbara Hundley, and son-in-law Steve Hux. Bruce is survived by his 3 children Deborah Hux of Fayetteville North Carolina, Bruce “Butch” Gray Jr (Pam) of Oakdale, Greg Gray (Karen) of Las Vegas Nevada; 4 step children: Ron Price (Carol) of Hilmar, Gary Price (Clara Sue) of Minot North Dakota, Nancy Martin (Floyd) of Atwater, Janet Kuhn (Gary) of Riverside; sisters: Betty Morris of Georgetown Kentucky, Effie Mae (Chick) Byrant of Miami Florida, and Patsy Meyers of Lexington Kentucky, brother David Pelfry, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service is scheduled for 10 am on Saturday, April 4th at North Hilmar Cemetery. The cemetery is located at 8710 Tegner Road in Hilmar. Memorial gifts are invited for First Baptist Church of Hilmar, 20038 Second Street, Hilmar California 95324.
