Carla Mae Messamer was born November 3, 1940 in Modesto, CA to Homer and Genevieve Messamer and passed away January 14, 2014 at age 73 in Modesto. She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her siblings David Messamer, Charles Messamer and Mary Shook. Carla attended local schools and was active in the Modesto Church of the Brethren youth group. While attending LaVerne College in La Verne, CA she obtained a teaching credential. She taught for 35 years in Ceres and Modesto city schools. Carla was an active member of Modesto Teachers Assoc. (MTA).

All of her life she was an active member of the Modesto Church of the Brethren. Cooking was a passion of hers. Her cooking experience started at La Verne College with the school’s food service. She enjoyed cooking at the church’s “Camp Peaceful Pines”. For several years she had the responsibility for preparing the barbeques for the annual MTA Teacher Appreciation picnics. She also cooked for the church’s weekly “Faith Bite” dinners on Wednesday evening, as well as preparing meals for up to 130 people to be served at the Salvation Army’s 9th & D shelter. Carla was an avid organizer of her church’s participation in the “Family Promise” program.

Carla’s “Celebration of Life” will be held at the Modesto Church of the Brethren at 2301 Woodland Ave. on February 9th at 3:00 pm. Memorial gifts may be made to “Family Promise of Greater Modesto” or to “Camp Peaceful Pines”.
