Clarice Lundell Wickstrom
Clarice Lundell Wickstrom
Clarice Lundell Wickstrom, a beautiful, godly woman, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 6th. Born in Turlock to Arvid and Esther Lundell, Clarice grew up with her younger sister Arleen on the farm in Hilmar. She loved to ride her horse on and around their farm. She was active in school sports playing basketball and softball. She graduated from Hilmar High School. She loved music, played the piano, and sang beautifully.
Clarice continued her education, graduating from North Park Junior College in Chicago and then San Jose State College where she also obtained her teaching credential. She returned to Hilmar, teaching first and second grades at Riverside and Elim schools for 22 years.
Clarice first met the love of her life when taking her father’s radio in for repair, though she did not realize it at the time. Don Wickstrom was working in the repair shop and knew that she was the one when he saw her. He pursued her until she caught him. They were married on July 12, 1952, and recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary.
Clarice and Don raised four wonderful children, Brian, Bruce, Karen, and Kim and were delighted when each of their five grandchildren were born. Clarice loved supporting all her children’s activities, attending all their games and meets.
Clarice was active in the fellowship of the Hilmar Covenant Church community by singing in the choir, serving in Covenant Women, making rice pudding for the annual Smorgasbord, and many other ministries. She mentored many young mothers and Christian women over the years. After retiring from teaching, she found other areas to be active in such as volunteering at the Emanuel Hospital Gift Shop and participating in the Hilmar-Irwin Historical Society. She had a deep appreciation of her ancestry and the history of the Hilmar Colony which showed through her compilation of family and historical photo albums.
Though wracked with numerous health issues stemming from rheumatoid arthritis and breast cancer, she persevered with grace, rarely complaining. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Clarice is survived by her husband Don Wickstrom; children Brian Wickstrom, Bruce (Janet) Wickstrom, Karen (David) McShea, and Kim (Tim) Painton; sister Arleen Land Becker of Minot, North Dakota; grandchildren Aleksander Wickstrom, Tyler and McKenna Painton, Timothy McShea, and Brent Wickstrom. Clarice is preceded in death by her parents Arvid and Esther Lundell and her beloved aunt and stepmother Ethel.
