Conchita Elizabeth Gin-Alcordo August 29, 1938 - February 15, 2022

August 1938 – February 2022

It is with a profound sense of sadness and shock that we announce the unexpected passing of our beautiful mother, Conchita Elizabeth Gin-Alcordo, on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center of Modesto. Conchita, or Connie to most people, was born in Merced, California on August 29, 1938, to Florencia and Felix Dacuyan, the youngest daughter and sister to Trungkolino, Andrea, Rosario, Henry, and Helen.

She met her first husband, Christopher C. Gin, while participating in Filipino-American community events of the Bridge Generation that she and their friends created and nurtured for over 70 years. After marrying and starting their family of five in Berkeley, California, they would go on to settle for many years in Fremont, California. In 1978, they moved to Modesto to be closer to her family and childhood friends. She would spend the rest of her life making new friends, strengthening ties to her old ones, and enjoying the company of her extended family. A devoted Catholic her entire life, she could be seen regularly attending mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and serving on the bereavement committee.

Connie had been a clinical lab scientist for 50 years, first starting out at Washington Hospital in Fremont, California, then later working at Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto, where she completed the rest of her career. In those years, she had helped to lead the technological evolution of blood bank and hematology, moving from counting blood cells on slides using a microscope to overseeing the integration of advanced technologies to assist in chemical analysis and reporting of blood and urine. Throughout her career, she never forgot the human element of the work that she and her colleagues performed, always striving to connect with patients, some of whom were close family and friends.

It was one such serendipitous encounter years after her divorce that she re-connected to her former fiancee, Patrick Alcordo. They would go on to marry and live a happy life of two decades. She loved to travel with Patrick, taking trips to Europe, Hawaii, Palm Springs, Seattle, Alaska, and throughout California. Mostly, they enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, both of their brothers and sisters and their families, and many, many friends.

Connie was also an avid tennis player. She played on multiple tennis teams each year at her tennis club, Modesto Fitness & Racquet Club. She had fond memories of playing and socializing with her teammates and club members, of traveling to other clubs in the area to compete against much younger opponents. At one time when she was in her 70’s, she and her doubles partner went undefeated. She loved the sport so much that she would often travel across the state and around the world to watch her favorite professional tennis players compete against each other in places like Indian Wells, CA, Wimbledon, England and Paris, France.

Connie’s lifelong commitment to the communities in which she lived and worked in include the following organizations: the Livingston Dragons/Dragonettes, FACT (Filipino Action Coalition Today), FANHS (Filipino American National Historical Society), Winton Historical Society, and the Modesto team for the Grande Dame Ladies Tennis League. She was also a member in good standing and attended many of the annual conferences of the American Association of Blood Banks.

She is survived by her sons and their spouses Corey and Candice Gin, Calvin Gin and Nidia Garcia, Leland Gin and Laree Huntsman, and her daughter and spouse Christina Gin-Salvatorelli and Chester Salvatorelli. She is also survived by her sisters and spouses Andrea and Vincent Gimeno, and Helen and Art Villarruz. She was predeceased by her husband of 20 years, Patrick Alcordo. Connie was blessed to have in her life an extended family who loved and adored her, too many here to name yet all who are recognized for the love and support she shared with and received from them.

Please join us as we honor her spirit and lay her body to rest.

Connie was a lovely and kind person who was very willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. As a Blood Bank supervisor, she was strict but never held back compliments if you’re doing a good job. She was loved by all of us and at one time awarded Clinical Excellence in Practice by Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. She will surely missed as a good friend and co-worker.

We will miss you Connie! I remember when I first met you in Modesto. I remember the weekend visits many years ago when Lee, Craig, Calvin and I were all into bicycling and having fun. I have always appreciated the food, the laughs, the comfortable feeling of being with family.

You and your family always made Laura and I feel like family.

Your kind heart, love towards everyone, telling things the way they are, your laugh, and your sincerity will truly be missed. We are very thankful that you have been a part of our lives. You will truly be missed by many people, especially us.
