May 1931 – October 2013
Dorothy Erlandson, 82, of Hilmar, passed away at Covenant Village Care Center after an extended illness. Dorothy was born in Hankinson, ND, to Hans and Anna Andresen. The family moved from rural North Dakota to rural Detroit Lakes, MN, when Dorothy was a sophomore in high school. After graduating from Detroit Lakes High School and working three years as a stenographer at the Minnesota State Highway Department, she married Albert Erlandson in January of 1952 during a Minnesota blizzard. The couple lived in Hilmar, except for a five-year sojourn in Detroit Lakes in the 1970s. Over the years Dorothy was a homemaker, a teacher’s aide, a school cafeteria cook, and with her husband, owner of a coffee shop in Minnesota. They were longtime members of Hilmar Covenant Church. Dorothy was happiest with her family around her, and she dearly loved her grandchildren and took great pride in them. She enjoyed baking dozens of types of Christmas cookies each holiday season while at home.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in 2004, after 52 years of marriage, and sisters Mary Rudolph, Jean Johnson, and Betty Nordgulen. She is survived by three daughters: Linda (Owen) Youngman of Deerfield, IL, Laurel (Art) DeRooy of Hilmar, and Kathy (David) Ward of Hilmar; two siblings: Carol Hukriede of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Wayne (Cheryl) Andresen of Veradale, WA; three grandchildren: Danae (Adam) Parker of Hilmar, Hans (Elizabeth) DeRooy of Wilsonville, Oregon, and Alan Ward of Hilmar; and one great-granddaughter, Alice Parker.
A Memorial Service is scheduled at Hilmar Covenant Church on Saturday, November 2, 4:30 pm. Private interment will be at Hilmar North Cemetery. Memorial gifts are welcomed for Hilmar Covenant Church, 20056 American Avenue, Hilmar, CA 95324. Please leave memories and condolences at www.allenmortuary.com.
