Esther Bailey, born in Akron, Ohio, was the only child of Irvin and Ella Kurtz Schrock. While in Ohio, she was able to see her mother’s side of the family with numerous cousins. When she was about six, Esther’s family returned to their home in Pasadena CA, where she spent the rest of her childhood, with much of her father’s extended family nearby. She enjoyed school, was active in her church, and liked being able to walk to the Rose Parade every year.
Upon completion of high school, Esther went on to Manchester College. After a year, she transferred to LaVerne College, graduating in 1943. While at LaVerne, she met her husband, Alan Murdoch (“Doc”) Bailey. Numerous tales of their college adventures were shared at the dinner table. Esther taught school for three years. Later, she used those teaching skills volunteering with PTA and Girl Scouts, while raising her four children. She also worked in her husband’s medical office.

Esther was always very caring, helpful and organized. She worked on genealogy, organized family photos and wrote the stories of her parents’ lives. She enjoyed painting with watercolors and loved gardening. A visit with her always included a tour of her yard. For 20 years, Esther volunteered at Descanso Gardens, in LaCanada, working in plant propagation and herbs. After Murdoch’s death in 1982, she established what became the “Bailey Center” at the Tujunga United Methodist Church. This center began loaning medical equipment and grew to include a food pantry and clothes closet for needy families.

Esther is survived by children Margaret (William) Johnson, Janice Murdoch, Lois (Ulrich) Bailey Hacker and Stephen (Ann) Bailey; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Esther is preceded in death by her husband Alan Murdoch Bailey and her parents, Irvin and Ella Schrock.

A Memorial Service will be held at Modesto Church of the Brethren, at 1:30 p.m. on Sat., June 27, 2015.
