Forrest Dirks, 93, of Turlock, passed away last Thursday evening at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House. Forrest was born in Winton, CA to Frank and Lydia Dirks, the fifth of nine children. He graduated from Livingston High School in 1940, then attended the National School in LA for training as a radio operator, and worked for the railroad. He graduated from Valley Commercial College in Modesto in 1967. Forrest enlisted in the Army Air Corps from 1942 – 1946, serving in Germany, France, and Ireland. In 1947, he married the love of his life, Naomi Grace Freeman. Another love of Forrest’s was farming. He farmed for 50 years, at one time managing a 4000 acre ranch. He grew almonds, fruit trees, and grew and sold Sago Palm Trees as a hobby. Forrest and Grace have been members of Merced Assembly of God Church, and have more recently attended the Turlock Freewill Baptist Church.
Forrest was preceded in death by his parents and his 8 siblings. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Grace Dirks of Turlock; daughter Sheila Bailey of Modesto, 3 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Burial Services with Military Honors will be held on Friday, February 6th at 10:30 am at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA. followed by a celebration of his life at Turlock Freewill Baptist Church.
