Gary Eugene Harmon, one of four children born to Elvas and Alice Harmon in 1940, passed away after a long illness.

Gary was born and raised in Ottumwa, Iowa. He lived in Ottumwa until he joined the United States Air Force soon after graduating high school and turning eighteen. After serving in the Air Force, Gary chose to seek new adventures and warmer climates by moving to California. Upon reaching California, Gary apprenticed to become a printer by trade. Gary worked at the Turlock Journal where he met Dianne Boyer. Gary married Dianne June 6th, 1970. Gary and Dianne lived in Modesto where they raised their two boys, Michael and David.

Gary was an organist for many churches in his early adult years. He loved playing musical instruments, including the piano and accordion. He had no formal training and taught himself to play by ear. A passion of Gary’s was roses. He loved raising them, at one time he had thirty different varieties he tended. Gary’s career spanned close to thirty years, with twenty-three spent at the Modesto Bee as a newspaper printer.

Gary is survived by his two sons Michael (Kate) Harmon and David (Jenni) Harmon and five grandchildren. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Betty Pike, Harry Harmon and Robert Harmon.

An Honors Service will take place at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery on Monday, Nov. 6th, 2017 at 11:30 am.
