Herbert “Bruce” Challberg, 70, and a Navy Veteran passed away this week with his family by his side.  Bruce was born in Turlock, CA and raised in Hilmar on a dairy. Bruce obtained an AS degree in engineering at Modesto Junior College. Joining the Navy at age 20, he served aboard the USS Fanning as a radar tech. He was in the Navy for five years and had one Western Pacific deployment during the Vietnam War.

After Bruce discharged from the military he started a family with Linda to whom he was already married. He had three sons and worked very hard to support them and Linda.  Bruce’s favorite thing by far was baseball and the S. F. Giants, sci-fi movies and playing with computers.

Bruce put everyone before himself and really enjoyed making those around him happy.  Bruce’s grandkids meant the world to him and he loved babysitting them.  Family was very important to Bruce and he was cherished by his family and friends.

Bruce is survived by his wife Linda; three sons Steven (Shelia) Andrew (Melissa) and Noah; sisters Kay and Irene, three grandchildren Tabitha, Wyatt, Leila; his nieces and nephews and dog Starr.

A  Public Viewing will be held from 12 – 1 p.m. with the Funeral Service starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Allen Mortuary.  A Committal Service with Military Honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday September 5, 2018 at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.
