James Michael Macedo

Macedo, J webFebruary 4, 1954 – May 22, 2014

Jim was born in Merced to George and Velma Macedo. He grew up on a family owned dairy in Hopeton. He graduated from Chowchilla HS in 1972 where he played football and received an award as most outstanding player.

Jim was a big-hearted, generous, honest, hard-working, straightforward man with a big smile, hearty laugh, extraordinary sense of humor and scores of friends. He could make anyone laugh! He had a lifelong career in agriculture. He worked on various ranches as a farmhand. In 1980 he went to work for Findley Upton. Later Kole Upton asked Jim to manage a 1660 acre hay ranch. In 1986 he started Macedo Hay Company as a broker/owner/operator. He hired out freight until 1991. When Jim felt his hay wasn’t moving fast enough he purchased his first truck, a 1979 Freightliner. Jim thought he could load faster, too. In 1993 he purchased a 1978 Roadrunner Hay Squeeze, his favorite piece of equipment. He managed California Alfalfa Cube Company 1987-88. He hauled hay to all stables in Yosemite National Park for 22 years. He donated hay and delivery services to many local organizations and sometimes he didn’t charge for his hard work. He continued to work until the day he went to heaven.

Jim was a volunteer fireman for the city of Chowchilla from 1981-84, and an assistant coach for the Chowchilla HS football team from 1983-84 with his friend Jack Nelson. He was an avid reader and loved to fly remote control planes with his brother-in-law, Fred. He traveled throughout the U.S., Mexico, Bahamas, Portugal, Azores, China and Japan. He was very social, a member of United Methodist Church, Merced Elks, and various Portuguese organizations.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Velma. Jim is loved and deeply missed by his wife, Karen; father, George; brothers Bruce (Michelle) and Tim; sisters Alice, Cindy (Bill) and Rosemary (Marc); daughter Tanya (Michael); two grandchildren, five nephews, one niece, many aunts, uncles, cousins, his adopted family the Machados and constant canine companion, Miss Molly.

A memorial service and reception is planned for Friday, May 30, 2014 at the United Methodist Church of Merced at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Jim’s name to the United Methodist Church of Merced, 899 Yosemite Pkwy, Merced, CA 95340, or Hinds Hospice, 410 W.
