Jerry Hawkins, 73, of Modesto died at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson on November 8 of a rare, rapid onset degenerative brain disease.

Born in 1944 to Margaret Hook Hawkins and Lewis Hawkins, Jerry graduated from Downey High School in 1961, attended MJC, and graduated from UC Davis in 1965. A year at Hastings Law School was followed by four years in the Air Force, serving as a Second Lieutenant and crew leader in the Titan II ICBM silos near Tucson, AZ. In January 1972, Jerry began a 28-year career with the Stanislaus County Assessor’s Office, retiring in 2000 as the Appraisal Standards Supervisor. He married Maree Mundelius in 1977 and daughter Erin was born in 1984.

We will remember Jerry as unceasingly curious, ever cheerful, kind, and always inventive. Family and friends were a priority. He loved family adventures that involved his daughter’s interests (outer space and fossil hunting) and he always had time to help Maree with local charity events. Jerry volunteered monthly for a Salvation Army food giveaway, and was a member of SIRS (Sons in Retirement) Branch 144. Through the years, Jerry helped friends and neighbors in the simplest but kindest ways, often driving elderly friends to doctors’ appointments or fixing whatever might be broken.

From childhood on Jerry enjoyed the Stanislaus National Forest through family cabins, hiking, cross-country skiing and going off road with his restored 1948 Willys Jeep. He also loved sailing, music, technology and science.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maree; daughter Erin and her wife, Anne Showalter of Falls Church, VA., and his brothers: David Hawkins (Sharon) of Modesto, Chris Hawkins (Ruth) of Oakdale and Mark Hawkins of Sacramento.

Memorials may be sent to the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, 911 13th St., Modesto, 95354 or Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto 95356.

Remembrances

  1. I want to extend to you and your family my. Deepest sympathy. It is difficult to watch our dear loved ones suffer and die, but soon that will be gone forever. God has promised us that he is going to wipe out all suffering, sickness, and death forever. We find tha promise at Revlation 2:4. Along with that hope is the expectation of John 5:28, 29; ther we see how those we have lost in death will be resurrected to life, here on earth. I do hope you find comfort in this as I, and many others have.
