Jerry Phelps, age 79 of Turlock, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020 at Emanuel Medical Center. Jerry was born in Turlock and graduated from Turlock High School in 1959. In 2007 he retired from driving a truck after 50 years. Jerry enjoyed working with his hands, including restoring antique farm equipment and making wine barrels, known by people as “Wine Barrels by Jerry”.
Jerry is survived by his sons Frank Kauffman, William Phelps, David Phelps, and Michael James; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two siblings Joann Brewer and Robert Phelps. Jerry is preceded in death by his wife Patricia Phelps and his sons Tony Kauffman and Steven Phelps.
Memorial contributions can be made to donor’s favorite charity.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 1, 2020 from 3pm – 5pm at Allen Mortuary and Friday, October 2, 2020 from 9:00-11:00a.m. A graveside service will be held 2:30pm on Friday, October 2, 2020 at Lakewood Memorial Park.

October 11, 2020 at 12:57 amJerry was my nephew dating back to March 1946 when he was about five years old. I married Wendell Stone, the brother of Barbara, Jerry’s step mom. We had a small house on their place on Central road. I watched Jerry and Jo Ann and later Robert grow up..
Jerry was active and mischievous along with Jo Ann. Those two could swing for hours in the yard singing Sioux City Sue and giggling and laughing. We went for many family rides together.
We rejoiced when he did and were saddened by other events as they happened.
I saw Jerry at his Grandmother Doris’s events as she celebrated her many birthdays. She was my schoolteacher and friend all through the years. Last time I saw him was at a reunion at my son’s home a couple of years ago. They stayed in touch and Dale has one of Jerry’s barrels. Huell Houser would have been AMAZED at his craft and stories, wouldn’t he?

September 28, 2020 at 7:08 pmJoann and Robert, So sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. The last time I saw him was at the Cousin’s Reunion. I didn’t know that Pat passed away last year.
Since we live in Indiana, things get here a little slower.
I’ve had so many good memories of all of you, but haven’t caught up for quite a while.

September 25, 2020 at 1:33 pmWhen I first met Jerry I’d say two years ago the first thing that came out of his mouth was something funny he was a funny genuine kind loving man and very handy. It was an honor to meet him.

September 19, 2020 at 4:02 amJerry Phelps was a good man. He always thought the best of everyone. He was good with his hands and could take old wine barrels and fashion them into beautiful ice coolers all refinished and on casters to make moving them around the patio easy.
He also had a million truck driving stories and could keep you laughing for hours recalling all the crazy things he had seen.
He and his late wife Pat were a team. When I first met them 15 years ago or so, Pat kept Jerry focused and on track. Later they reversed roles and it was Jerry keeping things organized and on track.
Jerry and Pat displayed true love and loyalty. Jerry told me he had personal faith in Jesus Christ for his salvation and eternal security.
This world is a better place due to the lives Jerry and Pat lived before us. I have been blessed by their friendship.
