Kathryn Marie Treat (Chastain), a long-time resident of Merced, CA passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on December 21, 2014. Kathryn was born to Curtis and Ila Chastain in Joplin, MO, and spent most of her adult life in Merced with her younger sister, Yonona Roach. She graduated from Merced High School in 1972 and received an A.A. in Secretarial Science from Merced Junior College. She met and married the love of her life, Rick Treat, in 1976. She worked as a secretary for Merced County Schools until she left work to focus on raising her family. Kathy was very passionate about being involved in the community and all of her children’s activities. She served as PTA president and School Board Member for Weaver Elementary School, was actively involved in the 4-H Club and the Lady Cougars Booster Club.

As her children grew up, she reentered the work force as a secretary at Merced High School. Shortly thereafter, she became very ill and was forced to retire. Because of her illness, she spent much time in Dallas, TX, where she made many lifelong friends. Despite her illness, Kathryn continued to remain very involved with her friends and the community and even found a new passion as a writer. Her book, Allergic to Life, inspired many people with chronic illnesses to not only survive but to live every day to its fullest. She was a founding member of Rave Reviews Book Club and was recently voted most supportive member.

Kathryn enjoyed spending her time taking trips to Columbia State Park and Asilomar (Monterey) with her husband, where they went to the beach and enjoyed a delicious bowl of clam chowder. She was an accomplished seamstress and she enjoyed making clothes for her young daughters, quilts for all newborns, as well as blankets for Valley Children Hospital. She also enjoyed spending time in San Francisco with her youngest daughter. In recent years, Kathryn’s favorite way to spend her time was with her 3 grandchildren. She was the most patient and loving grandmother any child could ever ask for and her grandchildren were her heart.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her father Curtis Chastain. She is survived by her husband Rick Treat; mother Ila Chastain; sister Yonona Roach; daughters Sarah Wass (Jason) and Laura Treat; and grandchildren Sadie (8), Kallie (5) and Rhett Wass (3).
