Born, July 19,1929 to Joseph W. Barnett and Harriet F. Wolley in New brunswick New Jersey with her five siblings, Mary grew up on her parents’ farm. A farm girl at heart she loved her animals, gardening and life on the farm. Mary attended High school beginning in New jersey and finishing in San Francisco where she worked as an usher at a movie theater and there met the love of her life, a handsome military man, Albert Eugene Johnson. Mary secretly married Albert, 18 when she was 16. After high school, at 17, Mary was sent by her parents to Michael Reese hospital School of nursing in Chicago Illinois, still unaware that Mary was married to Albert. Mary became pregnant at 18 and had to return to San Francisco. Albert and Mary then moved to Placerville where they welcomed their first child, Linda Catherine Johnson into the world. Albert worked in Placerville as a lumberjack. Mary and Albert then, 11 months after Linda, Cynthia (Cyndi) Louise Johnson was welcomed into the world. 2 years after Cyndi was born, Mary and Albert welcomed their son Albert Eugene Johnson III. Mary and Albert moved into the lumber mill house in Placerville, then from there they moved with their 2 daughters and son to Modesto.
Mary started working at scenic general hospital as an LVN then went to school to become an RN working in the ER. She promoted to charge RN and worked running the emergency unit until 1975 when she retired. Mary and Al travelled extensively to many counties including Thialand, Laos and Cambodia, Japan, China, Russia and Egypt and Europe. Al continued in between their travels to work at their locksmith business, which was then owned by their grandson David, until his death in 2000.
After her husbands death, Mary continued her travels with friends to Turkey, the Antarctic, and Canada to name a few. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, spending time with friends in the neighborhood and family who she dearly loved and spoke to daily. Mary attended MICL, cared for her dog and companion Koneeko, and was the self appointed neighborhood watch commander picking up trash and moving recycling receptacles in and out and distributing fruit and eggs to all of her neighborly friends from her prosperous fruit trees and pet hens.
Mary Catherine Johnson is survived by 2 daughters, Linda Eidson and Cyndi Maestas and husband Joseph Maestas and 1 son, Albert Eugene Johnson III and wife Kelly Johnson. Grandchildren Richard Eidson and his wife Stacie Eidson, David Eidson and Brandon Eidson and his wife DeVina Eidson, Joseph Maestas Jr., Kris Reed and husband Jeremy Reed, Paul Maestas and wife Tanna Maestas, Adam Johnson and Emily Johnson. Great grandchildren Kalli Eidson Spycher, Gillian Eidson, Matthew Eidson, Issabella Eidson, Tatiana Benjamin, Justice Eidson, Jasmine Holbert, Amber Lynn Maestas, Britny Lewis, Alyssa Reed, Tori Maestas, Tater Maestas.
She will be missed – she was loved by many and knew no stranger and treated all with love and respect.
