Mr. Haugsted, 94, of Turlock, passed away Monday, March 26, 2018. He was born in Pennsylvania. When Ove was in Denmark he completed trade school to become a Machinist and worked in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Modesto, then Turlock. Ove enjoyed vintage Marklin Trains, exploring the foothills and finding adventures on that next dirt road and seeing where it took him. He was a historian and when he lived in the Ralston Tower in Modesto he was an avid reader at the public library.

Ove is survived by five nieces and nephews, and many cousins in Denmark.

Memorial Service will be held Thursday, April 5, 2018, 7pm at Four Seasons Christian Fellowship, 216 Columbia Street, Turlock.

  1. Vikki Atkinson says

I knew Mr. Haugsted from my many visits to the main library in Modesto from 1987 to 1993. He and I would spend hours discussing history and any number of social topics. He even allowed me to interview him for a school report- I was in junior high and then high school-during which time he taught me much about his experiences in Denmark.

Mr. Haugsted never knew this, but my time spent with him-often several hours per week-had an impact on my future which saw me head to Europe for violin study, and go into teaching English and complete a doctorate in international and multicultural education with an emphasis in second language acquisition. I now volunteer my time to schools in Ghana, something of a legacy from my initial introduction to the outside world as a result of our long discussions at the round table we shared in the library.

He taught me to take time to get to know people, something I do with my own students today. He even became an honorary member of my family, joining us for some holidays.

When I was in the eighth grade, we had him to our home for Christmas eve dinner. Being a financially constrained year, the only things my family spent money on that holiday were food and a warm shirt for Mr. Haugsted. For years after, even in 2000 when I saw him again at the library while briefly in Modesto, he was still wearing that shirt. He taught me how important human relationships are and I like to think I’m carrying this forward.

May Mr. Haugsted’s memory be a blessing.
