Richard Arthur Havens

September 1921 – November 2012

Richard Arthur Havens was born on a farm just outside of Orland, CA in September of 1921. He went to elementary school through high school in Orland where he graduated in 1939. He spent 1.5 years at Chico State College before he went to work as an aircraft sheet metal mechanic. After the war broke out he transferred to Hickam Field in Hawaii where he continued working on repairing aircraft for the remainder of WWII.

After the war Richard returned home only to be drafted to serve in the US Army. When he was discharged from the army in 1947, he enrolled at Cal Poly Pomona. It was there at a local church that he met Murine Fillman and they were married in November, 1948. They moved to the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where Richard graduated with a teaching credential in agriculture. His first teaching job was at Liberty High School in Brentwood, CA. In 1964 they moved to Modesto and Richard began teaching agriculture at Modesto Junior College until he retired in 1981.

Richard has served as State President for the California Agriculture Teachers Assoc. as well as being active with Murine at Centenary United Methodist Church in Modesto for many years.

He leaves 4 children: Nancy Havens Biedenweg of Portland, OR, Richard Havens of Lincoln, CA, Jack Havens of Brea, CA, and Peter Havens of San Jose, CA, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Memorial services for both Murine (passed away in May 2011) and Richard will be held on Monday, November 19th at Centenary United Methodist Church located at 1911 Toyon Ave, Modesto, CA at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials for Community Hospice of Modesto or Centenary United Methodist Church.
