Velma Bernice Gilliam

Velma Bernice Gilliam went home to be with the Lord on July 18th, 2015. She was a loving mother and grandmother, who will be deeply missed.
Born on October 30, 1932 in Merced, California, she was the youngest of five children. The Jones family moved to Ceres on Monterey Park Track, known as Sandhill, where they became one of the first families to settle in the area.

Later Velma graduated from Ceres High School. She then attended Modesto Junior College and graduated from the Nursing program as a Geriatrics Nurse. Velma was a Certified Nursing Assistant and caregiver for over 50 years.

Velma loved to draw and also enjoyed singing, gardening, cooking, her dogs, crocheting, writing poems, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Wilbur and Minnie Jones; and siblings Wilbur Jr., Theodore, Addie, and Margie; and grandson Mitchell Washington.

Velma was a member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church for many years prior to moving to Stockton, California, where she attended several churches.

Velma completed her Christian mission and is survived by seven children to cherish her memory: children Robert Jr., Andrew and wife Claudine, Clifford and wife Felicia, Charles and wife Kara, Dianna and husband Ben, John, and Terie and husband Travis. Velma also has 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends to celebrate her life.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 11am at True Light Community Church, 1417 Harris Ave, Modesto, CA. Private burial will be held at Ceres Memorial Park.
