Walter Lee Switzer

December 1927 – July 2013

Walter Switzer, 85, of Modesto, passed away at Alexander Cohen Hospice House after an extended illness. Walter was born in Waterford, CA to Ralph and Jessie Switzer, one of six children. He attended Waterford schools and Oakdale High School. He joined the Merchant Marine and served in France, Holland, New York, and Oregon delivering food and supplies to US military bases. In 1950 Walt married the love of his life, Marilyn Steyer, and they have been married for 63 years. He has worked as a grocer for 42 years. In his spare time Walt enjoyed playing cards and golfing including many years as a member of the Oakdale Golf Club. He was a member of the Waterford Lions Club for 50 years and the Modesto Elks Club.

Mr. Switzer was a family man. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Switzer of Modesto, son Douglas (Cathy) Switzer of Modesto, daughter Paula Lyne(Randy) McElroy of Escalon, two brothers Gordon Switzer of Modesto and Bill Switzer of Oakdale, and 3 sisters: Ethel Nielsen of Modesto, Norma Kelley of Pleasanton, and Jennie Caulkins of Modesto, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The family will be announcing a Memorial Service at Community Baptist Church of Waterford on Friday, August 9th at 6:30 pm. Friends who are able to honor Walt with Memorial Contributions are asked to designate gifts to the Community Baptist Church, 328 D Street, Waterford CA 95386.
