William “Bill” Hartzell passed away peacefully on September 5th in Hughson, California. He is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is gone from our sight but forever in the hearts of his family and friends. Bill is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Sylvia; children Bill Ball (Paula) of Portland, Oregon, Beverly Hatcher, (Steve) of Turlock, California, Dan Hartzell, (Noreen) of Turlock, California, Dave Hartzell (Lynn) of Tracy, California and Teresa Miller (Mark) of Medford, Oregon. There are also five grandchildren and five great grandchildren who are true blessings to him and his legacy.

Bill was born and raised in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He served with distinction, in the U.S. Army in World War II, receiving a Purple Heart. He married Sylvia in San Luis Obispo on March 14 of 1947 and moved to Ventura California to start a wholesale and retail optical business that he owned until he retired in 1999 and moved to Turlock, California. In 2000 he began a new venture and opened an optical lab and retail store in Turlock – Eye Pros – and again retired from the business at 85 in 2008. For the last four years he has lived with his wife at Samaritan Village in Hughson, California.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Optical Pioneers from the Optical Laboratory Association in 2005. He worked with the Lions Club throughout the years, especially on the campaigns with vision issues. He served as Board President of the Ventura Missionary Church in Ventura and was on the Board that opened the Christian school on the grounds of the Ventura Missionary Church.

A lifelong animal lover, he is preceded in death by his adored dog, Suzie.

A celebration of life will be held at Samaritan Village 7700 Fox Road, Hughson California on Saturday, September 13 from 1pm to 3pm, followed by refreshments.
