Fresno native and veteran missionary Carl DuBois passed from this life to be with his Lord on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at the Covenant Living Care Center in Turlock, California. Carl was born August 29, 1936, in Reedley (Fresno County) California, son of Dwight E. DuBois and Pearl (Elma Niswander) DuBois. From about age ten, Carl wanted to be a missionary. After graduating from Fresno High School (class of 1954), he entered Biola College (now Biola University, La Mirada, CA) where he earned a B.A. degree in Elementary Education (K-8) and a California teaching credential in 1959. While at Biola, Carl met the woman who would become his wife, Lauretta J. Snodgrass of Ripon, California. For most of 43 years, Carl and Lauretta lived in two different indigenous communities in rural southern Mindanao, Philippines, where they translated the New Testament Scriptures and portions of the Old Testament into the Sarangani Manobo and Tagabawa languages, as well as other related language materials. Carl also privately published a practical guidebook, Hammock Weaving: The Two-Shuttle Method. Carl enjoyed playing piano and organ, woodworking, book rebinding, hammock weaving, calligraphy, backyard gardening, and maintaining the DuBois Family Genealogy.

Carl is survived by his wife, Lauretta, of nearly 62 years of marriage; his sons, Neil (Becky) of Ionia, Michigan, and Gary (Melody) of Berea, Kentucky; his grandchildren Jonathan of Cicero, Indiana, and Hannah, of Hardin, Kentucky; and his sister, Joyce (Gene) Stevenson of Clovis, California. He was predeceased by his parents, Dwight and Pearl, and older brother, Wayne (Artie) of Oakhurst, California.

Dear Lauretta, Neil and Becky, Gary, Melody, Jonathan and Hannah… Thinking of and praying for you now even as you are in the service celebrating Carl’s life. I’m richer for having known him, and for knowing all of you. I give praise to God for Carl’s life and friendship and scholarship and service and music and multiple talents. I will always remember the hammocks of branch conferences woven by the ever-alert parliamentarian. I am especially thinking of you, Lauretta, in this difficult season. May the Lord’s presence be near and real to you all as you grieve with hope. –Steve (&Janice) Q

That photo is how I remember Carl! The smile, the wit, the sharing of his love of piano at Nasuli church services and events, His giving spirit and love for his family, friends and others. Pat and I are praying for Lauretta and the family in this time of sorrow and celebration.
