Ransome LeyMonne Scott
Ransome was born in Mississippi to Bertiel Ard and was raised by a love village that included his mother, his aunt Nehemiah Crump and his grandmother Leontil Fields. The family migrated to Northern California when he was a toddler.
He is survived by his endearing wife of 18 years, Loretta Graham-Scott. He was a loving father to six children: Andre Lamont Scott, Sr., Tammy Annette Scott, Todd Donnell Scott (Cheryl), Rhonda Michelle Scott, Moniquea Lonetta Scott-Grimes (Efrem) and Oniquea Lanetta Scott. He was most proud to be a PawPaw to ten grandsons: Desean Williams, Malcolm Martin, Leymonne Robinson, Ahmad Scott, Andre Scott, Cordell Shaw, Solomon Cooper, Isaiah Armstrong and Kingston Cooper, and Joseph Dodd; and two granddaughters Elizabeth Dodd and Ashley Dodd; as well as seven great-grandchildren: Brailey Williams, Jaydin Martin, Carmelo Robinson, Soliel Robinson, Lonna Shaw, Nionna Shaw, Marilyn and Dominic. He has two surviving brothers, William Scott, Sr., of Oakland, CA and Jack Stills of Modesto, CA, who will miss the presence of their big brother in their lives, and was preceded in death by his sister Dolly Scott-Dixon. He was affectionately known as “Uncle Sonny” or “Sonny” to the many nieces, nephews and friends left to cherish his memory. Ransome never met a stranger and had a friend wherever he went.
As a young boy he attended school in Oakland, CA. During that time he shined shoes for blues musicians and servicemen traveling through West Oakland. The family eventually moved to Weed, CA where he graduated high school (1957) and attended Shasta College. He was a three letter sportsman and is an inductee of the Weed High School Hall Of Fame. During high school he was a fire fighter with the National Guard, fighting wildfires in the surrounding Siskiyou National Forest. Weed’s rural location gave him lots of opportunities for hunting and fishing which he loved.
He served in the US Army (1957 – 1959) as a Radio Communications Operator and was coveted for his high proficiency as a Morse Code Translator during his time in Arkansas and Germany. After ending his Army career he moved his family to the Oakland area for better employment opportunities after laboring for many years as a lumberjack at Long-Bell Lumber Company in Weed.
He had many accomplishments and honors during his life journey. After many offers and opportunities, he chose to work for Safeway Stores where he worked his way up to store manager and was responsible for opening several stores throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. He managed warehouse crews in Safeway’s milk, spice and meat plants and was mindful to represent well as he drove their trucks throughout the state. After relocating to Modesto, CA (1985) he soon retired from Safeway and began his work as a Job Developer for the Stanislaus Private Industry Council and later developed motivational curriculum for Friends Outside of Stanislaus County. He was able to motivate and uplift hundreds through his work. His success mantra was “If it is meant to be, it is up to me”.
During their retirement years he and his wife enjoyed camping at the surrounding lakes of Stanislaus and were lured by the beauty of Mt. Shasta. They personalized the window of their truck which proudly displayed generations of military affiliations and attracted lots of attention whenever they drove their Chevy Silverado around town!
Viewing will be held at Allen Mortuary on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 from 4:00-7:00p.m. Graveside service will be at Lakewood Memorial Park on Friday, July 10, 2020 at 10:00a.m.
