Arthur Harold Oberg, age 84, of Oakdale, CA survived the COVID-19 pandemic to succumb to an accidental fall at home on December 28, 2020. He was born in Spokane, WA on March 19, 1936. He attended college on a basketball scholarship at the University of Washington and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sanitation Science from UC Berkeley. Recently, he attended his 65th Rogers High School reunion in Spokane. He had been inducted into the National Honor Society as a senior.
Art was a Captain, 2nd Lieutenant of the US Airforce where he was stationed at Travis Air Force Base (AFB) and McClellan AFB. He served as a flight navigator in the Vietnam War where he transported troops to Danang and extracted people during the “Tet Offensive”. He was awarded 4 military medals. Art was invited to the inaugural Air Force Officer Training School (OTS). He was fortunate enough to attend the 50th OTS reunion held in AL in 2010.
He spent 40 years of his career owning and/or operating well-known “mom-and-pop” diners and “steak house” restaurants throughout California. Art was known for turning restaurants around into thriving businesses as well as his unmatched work ethic. He was a registered sanitarian in CA for many years.
Art is survived by his children, Kristin (John) Ryan of Cohasset, MA, preceded by Katrina (Kurt) Schlyer of Leavenworth, WA and Kamdin Dixon (preceded by Bill) of Walnut Grove, CA; seven grandchildren, Athena (Weston) Schlyer Carmichael, Magnus (Jessica) Schlyer, Karlson Schlyer, Nicholas Ryan, Hans Schlyer and the twins, Kelly and Boden Dixon; two great-grandsons, Clyde and Liam Carmichael; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; Ben Olaf and Astrid, his brother Ben Oberg and sister Betty Broberg. He is survived by his sister Lilly Lanphear.
Services are private to immediate family due to the coronavirus pandemic. Invitations to a virtual memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted by the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AFW2) at www.woundedwarrior.af.mil.
