Sohan Singh Samra

Oct 1928 ~ July 2026

Sohan Singh Samra, 97, passed away surrounded by family in San Jose, California. He departed this world as he lived: gently, quietly, and with strength and honor. Born in Samrai, Jalandhar, Punjab, India, to Mehar Singh and Amrit Kaur Samra, Sohan worked on his family farm from childhood into adulthood, sowing and harvesting wheat, corn, and sugarcane. To support his growing family, Sohan also traveled throughout Punjab working in construction before immigrating to the United States in 1970. Sohan settled in Livingston, California, with his wife and three children, and worked in Foster Farms’ poultry processing division until his retirement. A man of his word, Sohan lived a humble, stoic life, rarely complaining or speaking ill of others. Instead, he lifted people’s spirits with his quick wit and humor. Sohan was most content in his garden, playing in soil, sun, and water.

Sohan was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gurmit Kaur Samra. He spoke of Gurmit days before passing and was reunited with her for their wedding anniversary. Sohan is survived by his three children and their families: Malkiat “Sam” Samra (Nancy), Ron Samra (Joyce), and Barinda Samra Zarn; six grandchildren: Stephanie Samra, Danelle (John) Bright, Whitney (Justin) Rodriguez; Joshua (Stephanie) Samra, Troy (Dayna) Samra, Skylar Neelam Zarn and eleven great-grandchildren: Natalie, Isaac, Savannah, Aaron, Juliet, Everett, Jordan, Lauren, Norah, and twins, Cooper and Violet. Dearly loved by extended family across the United States, India, Canada, and England, Sohan is affectionately referred to as “Babaji” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of love.
