David W. Messamer

April 20, 1942 – September 11, 2025

David Wayne Messamer, a lifelong resident of Modesto, California, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 20, 1942, to Homer and Genevieve Messamer, David was the second of four children. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Carla Messamer and Mary Shook, and is survived by his brother, Charles Messamer.

David shared 61 wonderful years with his devoted wife, Sandra Sue Messamer, and together they treasured a life built on faith, family, and service. He is lovingly remembered by his children Elizabeth (Kevin) Crane, Sherri (Gary) House, and David Messamer; grandchildren Isaac, Joshua, and Nathaniel Crane, Jacob and Jarin House; three great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews who dearly loved him.

A gentle and soft-spoken man, David lived out his faith through quiet acts of service. A lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren in Modesto, he sang in the church choir and was active in youth group leadership, guiding young people with kindness and patience. He helped prepare meals for the homeless and served for many years as head chef at Camp Peaceful Pine, cooking alongside family and friends. With Sandra and their children, he also catered countless weddings, adding warmth and joy to many special days.

David’s creativity and craftsmanship shaped much of his life. He worked as a carpenter with his father and later as a school photographer, capturing memories for thousands of children across California. He found great joy in making pottery, creating beautiful pieces while taking classes with his sister Carla. He tended to his bonsai trees with peaceful dedication. In his youth, he played tenor saxophone in both junior high and the Modesto High School marching bands, a passion he remembered fondly.

A connoisseur of fine wines, David enjoyed many winery trips with his dear friends, John and Karen Cosner. His love of the outdoors began in childhood during family camping trips to national and state parks—traditions he lovingly continued with his own children through long road trips and shared adventures.

Family gatherings meant everything to David, especially holidays filled with laughter, warmth, and many late-night Rook games around the table.

David will be remembered for his gentle heart, steady faith, creativity, and the deep love he gave so freely. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he cherished.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at a later date.
