George Burgess “Bud” Owings
November 23, 1936 – February 13, 2026

Today we celebrate the life of George – a man whose journey was marked by love, growth, discovery and abiding grace.
From his earliest days in Columbus, Georgia, George carried vivid memories of family life on Grandma Mae’s wide porch, the steady guidance of his Master Sergeant father, and the tender devotion of his mother. Raised in a bustling home where family meant everything, he learned responsibility, perseverance, and the value of hard work.
After moving to Tampa, Florida, his adventurous spirit and curiosity flourished. A lifelong love of reading began during childhood illness, and science soon captured his imagination. In high school, he transformed the upstairs garage into a laboratory, studying protozoans under a microscope and building rockets that soared high above the neighborhood. His parents wisely gave him space to explore and wonder.
George attended the University of Florida, joined ROTC, and served as an Army Infantry Officer before earning his Master’s degree from Georgia State University. In 1968 he began teaching at Turlock High School, where he found his true calling. Whether teaching Physics, Chemistry, Photography, or his beloved Field Biology classes, he inspired students with his enthusiasm and joy for discovery.
In 1970 he met Rhett, an art teacher whose creativity and passion beautifully complemented his own. Their marriage was grounded in friendship, shared purpose, and enduring love. Together they built a home and welcomed daughters Kathy and Brenda to Turlock.
In the 1980s, George’s life was transformed by a deep commitment to Christ.
His faith shaped his service, leadership, and gratitude. Even through serious health challenges later in life, his thankfulness never wavered. George’s life reminds us that growth, faith, and grace define a person far more than perfection. He was deeply loved, and his story will not be forgotten.
