William H. Schmidt

William H. Schmidt, age 85, of Winton, California, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by his wife and children.
William was born August of 1940 in Newman, California to Harry and May (Jensen) Schmidt. He was raised in Gustine, California, where he graduated from Gustine High School with the Class of 1958. Following graduation, William proudly enlisted in the United States Army in 1958. After receiving his honorable discharge, he married the love of his life, Frances Machado. Together they built a life centered around faith, family, farming, and community.
William farmed throughout his life and remained devoted to the land he loved. He was a faithful attendee of Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Atwater and was active in his community through organizations including St. John’s Festa, the Merced River School Board, and the Atwater Rotary Club.
William enjoyed hunting, spending time outdoors, and Tuesday night poker with friends. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generous heart, and deep love for his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and May Schmidt; his sister, Jeannie Schmidt; his brother, George Schmidt; his foreign exchange student, Peter Steckel, who became like a brother to him; and his grandson, Tommy Schmidt.
William is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Frances Schmidt; his children, Tom (Carol) Schmidt, Jon (Debbie) Schmidt, and Cathy (John) White; three grandchildren and several step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Atwater.
Private military interment will be held at a later date at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.
