Elizabeth Vestal

Elizabeth Vestal

April 1926 – April 2021

Born in Chemainus, British Columbia, Canada, Elizabeth was married to Tom Vestal for 60 years before his passing in 2008.

They have 5 Daughters, 3 Grandchildren, and 6 Great Grandchildren. Daughters:  Barbara Vestal, MariLouise Vestal, Ellen Vestal, Alice Vestal, and Edith Marie Vestal. Grandchildren:  Karlie (Stephen) Pettitt, Gregory (Marnie) Nunes, and David (Christina) Nunes. Great Grandchildren:  Jason T. Elder, McKenna Lewis, Cohen Nunes, Salvador Nunes, Addison Nunes, and Eli Nunes.

Elizabeth was a role model for many to look up to and emulate. Known as an outstanding teacher she received numerous awards during her career.  Teaching first grade and then ESL to adults gave her great joy. It was her nature to volunteer help wherever and whenever needed. For many years Elizabeth was an Ombudsman to senior care facilities in Santa Clara County.

She believed it a privilege to be able to give to many causes, needs, and cultural activities dear to her heart.  As a beloved DKG and AAUW sister, she held many leadership positions and continued to support in any way she could to ensure her participation embodied the vision and mission of the group.

There were never knitting or crocheting projects she couldn’t accomplish.  It was her love for others that kept her busy making baby layettes, hats, afghans, shawls, pot holders, doilies and things we probably don’t know about.  It gave her pleasure to see these things contributed where needed.  Needlepoint, embroidery, and gardening were also of her many talents.

Reading was a passion of hers that was never exhausted.  Traveling gave Elizabeth, Tom, and their daughters’ great adventures that were shared for many years to the present.

Mom made friends wherever she went.  She had a heart of gold and gave her all to her family and to helping others.  The knowledge she had in so many areas of life became greatly appreciated by her daughters as they matured.  She will be missed as a Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandmother for her wisdom and love that has not failed us.

Surrounded by her daughters, Elizabeth passed away peacefully.

Elizabeth was 50+ year member of American Association University Women; she was a member of the Turlock/Modesto AAUW Branch as well as a Branch in the Bay Area.
She regularly opened her Turlock home as the collecting site for items being donated to our Fall Scholarship Fundraiser; we also put together the baskets and bags for this event at her home usually on a Sunday afternoon. Elizabeth was a valued contributing member of our Branch. She will be missed.

Elizabeth was an accomplished knitter, needle pointer, and volunteer She was an active member and president of AAUW, and Tuesday Reading Club. We celebrated Elizabeth’s 90th birthday with one of AAUW’s interest sections. Elizabeth encouraged me, and attended my adult education knitting class where she shared her expertise; we each knitted an American flag. Elizabeth registered our son to vote , and purchased Girl Scout Cookies from our granddaughter . Delighted to recall her stories about wearing a woolen swimming suit knitted by her mother, and the disappearance of her cat in a neighbor’s shed for a week. Will treasure the red hat she knitted for my yard duty days at school.
