Hazel Meghee December 4, 2025

Hazel Elizabeth Meghee
April 1928 – November 2025
Hazel Elizabeth (Everett) Meghee was born in Edmond, Oklahoma, and moved with her family to Modesto, California at a young age. A lifelong educator, Hazel earned her teaching credential from Fresno State and went on to share her gifts of knowledge, patience, and kindness with countless students over the years.
Hazel served as Director of the Oakdale Nursery school and later taught at Gustine High School. She also worked as a substitute teacher for Modesto Christian preschools and as a teacher’s aide within the Oakdale Union School District. Whether in a classroom, a church, or her own home, Hazel spent her life teaching—both through her words and through her example. She was also a devoted Sunday school teacher, joyfully nurturing young hearts in their faith.
A longtime member of Sierra Baptist Church in Oakdale, Hazel lived out her values with quiet strength. She was a woman of conviction who chose not to drink alcohol, a personal commitment that led her to become active in the women’s temperance movement. Hazel found joy in creative handiwork and enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and cooking. She lovingly crafted Cabbage Patch dolls for Shriners Children’s Hospital and knitted countless baby beanie caps for local hospitals—simple acts of service that brought comfort to families she would never meet.
Hazel was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence Paul Meghee, who passed on December 9, 2006.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law Bob Koughn of Modesto; as well as her three cherished grandchildren—Robert, Paul, and Elizabeth Koughn—who brought immense joy to her life.
