Louis Almeida April 9, 1924 - June 27, 2022

April 9, 1924 – June 27, 2022

Embraced by loved ones, Louis passed into the hands of our Lord on June 27, 2022.  He faced his short illness with dignity after living a happy and healthy 98 years. Louis was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a true friend.  He was a devout Catholic and a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Turlock, CA for over 70 years.

For his family, he provided a strong work ethic, generosity, love, and a strong devotion to God. His love of the Land and what it could produce played a very important role in his life.

Louis was born in Livermore, CA on April 9, 1924.  He was the third child and first son out of eight children born to Cezar and Felicidade Almeida.

The family moved a few times before settling in Turlock, CA.  He went to Keyes Elementary School and Turlock High School, from which he graduated in 1942.

In 1945, Uncle Sam called Louis, and he served a short stint in the U.S. Army.  He was discharged early as a hardship case since his father was ill and needed Louis’s help to work the farm and support the family.

He married Mabel Pinheiro in 1947, and, together, they had three children: Loren, Karen, and Karla (Lancaster). The union ended in divorce.

As he continued to farm and do custom work of all types, Louis and his brother-in-law, Frank Sarmento, started S&A Manufacturing in Livingston, CA in 1957, specializing in the production of farm equipment. S&A Manufacturing is still in operation; his skill as a draftsman and machine and tool designer played a big part in its success and longevity. Louis enjoyed taking part in the work done at S&A Manufacturing, sharing his knowledge and advice with anyone who asked and probably with a lot who didn’t ask.

He married Christina Huter in 1971, and the union produced two children: Louis and Elizabeth.

Louis belonged to the Knights of Columbus for over 60 years and was a past Grand Knight.  He was instrumental in starting the Linguica Booth at the Stanislaus County Fair; he also belonged to several Portuguese Fraternal Associations.

Louis never complained of hard work and never felt he was without.  He loved his family, and, even though words were few, his family knew of that love.

Louis was predeceased by his parents, granddaughter, Corinne Almeida, his five sisters and brothers-in-law:  Mabel and Frank Sarmento, Margo and Ralph Tyree, Maria and Alfred Jorge, Marvee and Clarence Andre, and Maxine Younger.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Christina Almeida, children, Loren (Dave) Almeida, Karen Almeida, Karla (Will) Lancaster, Louis (Kristie) Almeida, and Elizabeth (Kent) McRae, and grandchildren, Christopher Lancaster, Nolan Almeida, Marissa Almeida, Ella McRae, and Kate McRae.  Also surviving Louis are his two brothers, George (Stephanie) Almeida and Gary (Cecelia) Almeida.

The family extends a heart full of gratitude to his caregiver, Ripley, for the wonderful job and love she showed Louis during the last month of his life.
