Victoria Sandoval, 73, spent her life surrounded by the people she loved most: her family.
Setting roots in Turlock, she raised her family in a quiet suburb, keeping them warm, well fed and loved. She was known for her humor, loving personality and a desire to always be part of the moment. She loved talking, even when there was nothing important for anyone to say, and she loved babysitting her nieces and nephews over the years. During summer breaks and weekends, shows like I Love Lucy, Family Feud and Walker, Texas Ranger filled the house for years and became part of our everyday family life.
Victoria believed in togetherness. She made meals for the family that we all ate together and pushed us to stay connected and show up for one another. She was easygoing, compassionate and supportive, but she also had expectations for her children — and ultimately took pride in the people they became.
She never said it but she loved the routines that brought us together: Tuesday flea market trips, grocery trips to National Market, and Thanksgiving gatherings at her parents’ home, where she always brought the potato salad and some Coca-Cola to share. She also loved shopping, getting her hair done at JC Penney, eating at Chinese food buffets and taking any chance to enjoy time with family without having to do all the cooking herself.
Victoria faced many health challenges throughout her life, including diabetes, mobility struggles and memory issues later in life. Even so, she never stopped showing love to the people around her. In her final hours, despite pain and exhaustion, she still smiled every time her children walked into her room.
Victoria is survived by her husband of more than 47 years Francisco Escalante and her children, Ericka, Mari and Tony, along with her grandchildren Angel, Joey, Tori and Brandy. She will be remembered for the warmth, humor and steady love she brought into our lives.
