Tony Mendes, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025. Born to Joe C and Mary R Mendes, Tony spent his formative years on the family ranch in Hilmar, growing up alongside four siblings.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Yonnie Mendes; his sons Ronald (Eleanor) Mendes, Daniel (Joy) Mendes, Anthony (Karen) Mendes, and Raymond (Cathy) Mendes; his stepdaughters, Tamara Romagnoli, Dana (Bob) Butler, and Kendra (Lance) Perry. Tony’s legacy extends to his thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one grandchild.
Tony leaves behind his brother, David (Mary Ann) Mendes of Hilmar, as well as his brother-in-law, Alan “Bud” Serpa of Turlock, and his sister-in-law, Delores Mendes of Hilmar. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe C and Mary R Mendes, and his siblings, Lucy Mendes, Mamie (Joe) Carvalho, Amelia Serpa, and Joe Mendes.
In Gustine, Tony cultivated a life for his family on a ranch he proudly developed, complete with two chicken houses and a three-acre walnut orchard. His dedication to the land was evident in the meticulous care he bestowed upon it. Alongside his ranching endeavors, Tony dedicated 37 years to a full-time career at Carnation Can Company. Even after retiring from Carnation, his passion for the ranch drew him back for an additional seven years. Later in life, Tony returned to his roots in Hilmar, residing in his deceased parents’ home. His industrious spirit found a new outlet in retirement as he built a spacious workshop in his backyard, where he enthusiastically tackled countless projects, always finding joy in staying active. His other yearly activity was his garden that he was so proud of, especially growing his precious fava beans.
A familiar sight around town was Tony in his bright yellow pickup, often with his beloved canine companion by his side. He was an avid fan of the San Francisco 49ers, following their seasons with unwavering enthusiasm and rarely missing a game. Tony was also a friendly and familiar face in Hilmar, frequently seen walking (or carrying) his cherished dog through town.
Never one to be idle, Tony valued connection and community. He enjoyed socializing with friends, participating in Portuguese Festas, and especially treasured visits to his nephews’ ranch. His love for his sons was profound, and he took immense pride in each of them. He also embraced the role of stepfather with warmth and affection, cherishing the time spent raising his stepdaughters. The joys of his life were amplified by the presence of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Tony was deeply involved in the Hilmar First Baptist Church, generously volunteering his time and actively participating in services and bible studies. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and it is comforting to know he is now at peace, sharing a ruckus reunion with his brother Joe.
Tony will forever be remembered for his infectious smile and distinctive laughter, qualities that touched all who knew him.
A celebration of Tony’s life will be held at the Hilmar First Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 13th, beginning with a family viewing at 9:00 AM, followed by a public viewing at 10:00 AM, and the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Graveside services will follow at the cemetery, with a reception to be held at the church afterwards.
