In Loving Memory of Gail Fontana (née Sand)
Gail Fontana was born in Modesto, California, and grew up locally, spending her life surrounded by the community and people she loved. She carried with her a strong spirit, a sharp wit, and a personality that was impossible to ignore.
Gail was always proud of her years working as a machinist at Procter & Gamble in Modesto, where she formed lasting friendships with members of the Fontana family. Later in life, she worked as a nursery representative, delivering and arranging plants at local hardware stores throughout the area — a role that perfectly matched her love of gardening, landscaping, and helping others create beautiful spaces.
Gail became part of the Fontana family when she married Robert “Bob” Fontana. She was a perfect match for him — outspoken, strong-willed, sometimes a little abrasive, and never afraid to carve out her own place in the family. Those who knew Gail understood that beneath her tough edges was a deeply loyal and caring heart.
Gail will be remembered for her generosity, honesty, talent, and fierce loyalty to the people she loved. She and Bob had a special way of welcoming neighbors and friends into their lives, often introducing them as family — sons, daughters, and lifelong friends chosen by love rather than blood.
She dearly loved Bob and his daughter, Anne, and was heartbroken by the loss of each of them. In recent months, Gail missed Bob tremendously after his passing, and those who knew them can easily imagine the two of them together again, probably keeping heaven lively and the angels on their toes.
Gail had a passion for gardening, landscaping, cooking, camping, and children. She willingly shared her talents and time helping others with projects and caring for those around her. She believed in giving the shirt off her back to help someone in need.
She leaves behind her niece, Lisa; her sister-in-law, Barbara Harcrow (George); her brother-in-law, Andy Fontana; her Fontana and Harcrow nieces and nephews; her beloved animals, including dogs Romeo and Sophie and her cat, Kitty; and many extended family members and friends whose lives she touched over the years. The family would also like to recognize and thank her wonderful caregivers, Ray Winger, Leah Rojas, Lindsey Prue, and Patricia Hightower, for the care, compassion, and support they provided to Gail.
Though Gail could be blunt and spirited, she was genuine to her core, and those fortunate enough to know her understood that her love and loyalty ran deep. She will be missed, remembered fondly, and spoken about often — probably exactly the way she would have wanted.
No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA in Gail’s memory.
