Gene was born on April 8, 1935 to Gustav and Ruth (Shaver) Palm.  He served in the USMC from 1953-1956.

While working toward his Master’s Degree from the University of Minnesota he coached 2 youth basketball and baseball teams, the Corker’s and the Cardinals.  This was a passion for him and he carried those memories throughout his life.  Later he relocated to San Diego and worked for the County as a Probation Supervisor until his retirement.  Two and a half years ago he moved to Turlock, California where he resided with his sister Carol and her family.  All who met him there called him “Uncle Gene” from that point on.

In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by his sister Beverly Gipson and Pat Legros, as well as his brothers Donald Palm and John Palm.

He is survived by his sisters Darlene Spencer of La Mesa, CA and Carol Morris of Turlock, CA, and his brother Duane Palm of Ventura, CA, as well as many nieces and nephews.

I was so shocked to get the sad news that uncle Gene passed away. I remember when i lived just a few blocks from him he would stop by for coffee he really liked Clint my boyfriend. We took him to a couple of the chargers games and had so much fun even though the chargers lost..And when he came up here when my mom his sister was at the end of her life..we all went up to the casino and he let me gamble playing black jack with his money i won him a load of cash he split it with me. He always loved to come eat what ever i cooked. I spent several holidays with him and grandma and i will always treasure our time together. I will miss you uncle Gene!

Gene, my beloved brother, oh how I miss you! We bonded over our mutual love for Jake the lab. We saw each other every day over the period of many years and grew closer as time went by. Gene loved to walk Jake and Jake thoroughly enjoyed the walks. We sat across the street in the shade of the giant pine tree on the grounds of the La Mesa Historical house for hours on end. It was his favorite place to sit with Jake and I. First we lost Jake, and when Gene’s health failed and he moved to Turlock so Carol could take care of him, I lost a another piece of myself. Life will never be the same without Jake and Gene. May he rest in peace. He had a wonderful life and will be missed by many.

Uncle Gene was always the patriarch of the family. It seems like he took care of us all and from as far back as I can remember, at our house visiting. A few years ago he had to get his glaucoma treated and I was able to take him. I was so glad that I was able to do that for him. I’ll always remember a trip the family made to Las Vegas when Austin was little and within 30 minutes Uncle Gene won quite a bit of money playing the slots. He gave me some money because I had driven there from Idaho, it was so sweet of him. Like Steven, I remember Uncle Gene sitting outside for hours with Jake. He loved that dog. When I told the boys that Uncle Gene passed, they both remembered him fondly as well. I will miss my Uncle Gene and loved him very much.

I will miss Uncle Gene so much. I have so many fond memories but one that sticks out was when he was visiting his family in Minnesota. We took him up to a farm in Cushing, MN. We took the horses out for a ride. As we were riding down a gravel road lined with Ponderosa Pine trees, all of sudden, for reasons unknown my horse stopped and decided to go backwards into the trees. Uncle Gene just turned and laughed while saying to me that it wasn’t the right way to ride a horse. He will be sadly missed by many.

  6. Steve Spencer says

Uncle Gene was one of a kind.He loved his family and would do anything for them. What I will always remember is over the last decade or so his love for DOGS.He had dogs when he was younger.Jake was the love of his life.He may have been my dog but when I went to work Uncle Gene and Jake would spend hours sitting across the street in the grass.Gene would walk Jake (Jake would really walk Gene) and be gone for hours. We would get worried when he got home he’d say Jake wanted to take a nap in somebody’s yard so he let him.Jake loved Gene and now there both together in Heaven.

I love and miss you. Semper Fi Uncle Gene.
