Gilbert L. Pope, age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his residence in Turlock on Friday, June 19, 2020.  Gilbert, known as Lamar, was born in San Jacinto, California and enlisted in the Army National Guard from 1957 to 1965. In 1954 Lamar settled in Turlock where he owned “Popes Market” until 2001. In August of 1959, Lamar married to Nancy Carrol Haile and have been married for almost 61 years.  Lamar belonged to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed astronomy.

He is preceded in death by his parents Monroe and Mabel (Croshaw) Pope, and brother Jim Pope.  He is survived by his loving wife Nancy (Haile) Pope; sister  Shirley L. (Pope) Jones; four children, Donald Pope, Ronald Pope, Kathy (Pope) Vincent, and Julie (Pope) Escobar; 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4pm – 6pm on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Allen Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 9am on Friday, June 26, 2020 also at Allen Mortuary with a graveside to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.

    Dear Nancy and family I’m so very sorry to hear about Lamar he was a great guy .I and my brother Jimmy grew up around you and you guys were the nicest people went to Pope’s market all the time ..I got married and my kids went there also my thoughts and pray go out to you and your family ..

    Lamar and I attended Marguerita Elementary School in Alhambra, California together from 4th through 8th grade. He will be missed. Although I never met Nancy, she has always been gracious to me in her correspondence.
